Hi Todd, So.. the corn syrup is glucose a.k.a. sugar syrup hahaha.. I thought that they are different thing of each other.. thank you for your information... this is actually inverted sugar, a lot sweeter than glucose syrup because has all the fructose, from the sucrose being broken down into glucose and fructose by the tartaric acid.

I have a problem when Im doing the cornsyrup. I do it according to your recipe and it thickens after reaching 115°C. I turn off the heat and let it cool for a while. Then I put it into a jar, and after maybe ten to fifteen minutes it turns into solid sugar! I made it twice and the same thing happened. What am I doing wrong .

I tried making this and it turned out strange. I let it cool and instead of getting a syrup, I ended up with a thick, sticky taffy sort of result. I followed the recipe exactly so I don't know what happened. Any advice.

It is virtually impossible to make cream of tartar at home as it a bi-product from making wine. If the mixture is overheated it will become like a darker syrup. .

He stated in the video (twice, I believe) that this is NOT corn syrup. He said you cannot make corn syrup at home - but that this is an acceptable substitute, especially for those living in countries where you cannot buy corn syrup. I don't eat processed foods. Corn syrup is highly processed. So, I can make this (using my minimally processed sugar) and get the same, but healthier results.

I think it's better if we call it, sugar liquid, because corn syrop is not exactly this, corn syrop is made from the degradation of starch by enzyme or acids and it is in dextrose degree or percentage (DE), it more complicated to make at home. :) . Thank you for this demonstration, however watching through this video I would like to ask you to change the title of it because it is completely misleading: what you have done is that you made an Over-saturated Sucrose Hydro-Solution (Formula for Sucrose: C12H22O11=table sugar, melted or in crystal form, both) which is not Glucose (Formula: C6H12O6) syrup at all. I think you meant to say 240 degrees Fahrenheit or 115 degrees Celsius. Also, water cannot exceed 100 degrees Celsius, so the thermometer is unnecessary. Simply bringing to a boil brings the desired temperature. .
+Fonzie Avila Those people who didn't notice the mix-up failed beginners science in middle school and shouldn't be allowed in a kitchen without supervision in the first place.. When using sugar and water together the temperature will exceed the boiling point of water. That is why there are different stages when using the mixture. When the temperature becomes higher different properties are introduced with the hard crack stage being the highest. However, if you know what you are doing, all of the different stages can be achieved without the use of a thermometer. .

I could use cane syrup but it is a bit stronger in flavor and not as sweet and would alter the recipe too much. Would just caramelizing the sugar first with a few tablespoons of water yield a dark syrup That was what I was thinking if I follow the directions for golden syrup and let it get darker then it should come out similar to a dark corn syrup. I don't buy corn syrup anymore due to the GMO factor.. In most recipes, yes. Some special recipes will call for corn syrup specifically. (the major difference between corn syrup and what he's just made is added chemicals and viscosity, I think).

Is the dexcom expensive I would like to have one... But here in the Netherlands we have to pay for it ourselfs.. Ouch...yes it is expensive. :( I just read from someone today, and I believe in the Netherlands, trying to get one. I do have friends in the US who pay for it out of pocket too since their insurance won't cover it, but they feel it is worth it. We didn't get it until insurance could help with the cost..
Bit of correction... What they'll replace IS the SENSOR. The sensor is what physically goes into your skin and has the adhesive and plastic mounting base on, and is FDA approved for, and Dexcom says should be replaced every seven days.. The part that is supposed to last 6 months (with the G4) or 1 year (with the Seven Plus) is the TRANSMITTER..
Looks like you love dexcom device. Do you see a lot of ppl will start use it this year Will it be a very very popular device.

I HATED the original Medtronic sensors!!! I had a Paradigm 722 and wore a Dexcom G4 sensor. I changed to the Animas/OneTouch Ping. I have since switched to the Minimed 530G because I was sick of wearing two devices. The new Enlite sensors for Medtronic are painless!!! I am so happy that I switched! I did love my Dexcom though!!!.
I have the Medtronic CGM system, wish I had gone with the G4, I can't keep my sensors in place, they come off all the time. Looking at reviews, it appears to be a recurring problem with most users..

Hi, after watching this video I applied for the system, its taken over 5 months but I was invited to buy it today. I was wondering how you are still getting on with it. Its a very expensive system so I am keen to hear anything you have to say about the 5 months you have been using it. Even if you can create a user you will have to wait to get it, I had to wait 5 months to be accepted. Whilst I like the system and ignoring its expense, the problem I have is that all it gives is bad news - very accurately - lol /jk.

There is very little good info out there I barely knew what this was disease was and what caused it until it was too late and I got type 2. +Techmoan I need your help, I just bought new device and sensor, unfortunately the sensor got detached in less than 24 hours any help how to fix it please.The one I got it reads in mml and I do calculations in mg, any way that we can change the reading category to mg rather than the standard mml.
So I've just completed week 2 wearing the libre. Wow.. Only issue is, I borrowed the reader from a friend so have to give it back and I'm now on the waiting list. I feel like I've just had an organ removed.. I'm on the fence about ordering the dexcom system instead but it's got a higher initial cost and potentially higher ongoing cost. Anyone in the UK tried one There's also the G4 / G5 decision...
That needle is bigger than I expected lol, but 60 pounds for a single sensor That's what, $80-$90 usd or so That seems like they are taking advantage of you a bit, of course sure there is the convenience, and won't run out of strips, but still. I sure hope those things stick well when exposed to wire. Looks like it sticks fairly well when you were taking it off though. Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if some people tried to find ways to reset the timer, pop a new battery in and sanitize the filament/needle to re-use it if possible..
Ah, I see, I didn't know that these were based on a chemical reaction, I suppose other methods of analyzing the blood sugar level would be much bulkier, I also thought that the sensor only lasted two weeks, a whole month is much more reasonable, of course I'm talking from the standpoint of a cheap person who doesn't need one of these systems. I am glad to hear that it has had such a positive effect though, it's great when new breakthroughs can actually help people and improve their quality of life..

If anyone hates finger prick tests like me, or your loosing sensation in your finger and want easy alternative site testing look at the product called the genteel. It for the lack of a better description is basically a pricker with a spring loaded syringe that creates a vacuum and draws a drop of blood out. This means you can test anywhere you normally wouldn't get blood easily, arms, legs, stomach, shoulder, palms of hands, forearms ect and it is from my own experience 100x less painful than on the fingers when I test on my upper arm..

Many people stated that this is an expensive solution, but it's actually not any more expensive than a "conventional" solution if you have to monitor your glucose level on a regular basis, meaning a few times a day (which I do). I also read that the 2 week limit on the sensors might be a marketing thing, but I don't think so. Measuring glucose requires a reagent, and the sensor is a glucometer in itself, so it contains a circuitry with battery. Both the reagent and the battery will of course deplete eventually. Knowing a fair amount about electronics, I'm actually quite amazed by the fact that it lasts this long.. that was an interesting watch. I have a brother who suffers from diabetes. I wonder if he'd like it..
This looks pretty amazing. I used a continuous glucose monitor in the past where I had to attach the sensor to my stomach. The main unit was large and clunky and I bad to shave my stomach to apply the sensor. The arm position is so much better and there won't be much of any hair. This is something I would actually use!! Come on US approval!!.
Really interesting to learn about these new blood readers, very expensive but really cool and useful for diabetics!. Interesting the sensor filament looks much thicker than the sensor filament on the Dexcom and Minimed, but those are meant to be worn on the abdomen rather than the arm..

+Peleg Tsadok Induction would take care of the battery charging, that's not a problem. Just wear a charge-band once a week/month to charge it up. But yes, the challenge would be how to read the blood glucose repeatedly.. unless an entirely reagent-free method of reading glucose could be devised, perhaps using a fancy set of detectors that could give an accurate measure of some sort....
You have to test your blood normally before driving because if your sugar is low the DVLA won't accept the reading from the libre as the results run about half an hour behind as they come from interstitial fluid glucose levels and don't change as quickly as normal blood glucose readings when our blood sugars are becoming low,therefore to avoid any accidents always test normally with your blood glucose monitor,if running low eat appropriate carbohydrate ,wait 45 mins,recheck blood glucose with normal monitor,and carry on driving if reading is above 6mml. This freestyle libre has really helped me sort out my overall Hba1c and makes it easier to realise if my blood sugar is going up or down as sometimes I have given extra insulin to lower my levels and ended up hypo as the libre showed me that my blood sugar was on its way down anyway.Well worth every penny..

+JackNet Productions Are you sure of Type 1 Type 2 is the one usually where you can make early dietary adjustments and get it under control that way, as it's a result of insulin resistance. Type 1, the pancreas simply doesn't produce insulin at all (Islets of Langerhans get destroyed by an autoimmune response, typically) and you're entirely dependent on external insulin..
I had no idea you were a diabetic! I've been Type 1 for almost 10 years now, and a continuous glucose monitor is my dream. Here in Canada, we don't get much coverage for the costs of testing supplies, so something like this would be prohibitively expensive for the average person, but I'm hoping it becomes available at a reasonable cost soon. Good for you, and I'm glad it's making a positive impact on your health!. In the Netherlands the Libre isn't covered by Insurance yet. Insurance companies have been holding off because of reports of false or inaccurate measurements. An experiment has been set up to validate the performance and accuracy, but so far Abbott hasn't been able to deliver enough devices so satisfy the test requirements. If the conclusion of this experiment is positive the device will almost certainly be covered by at least the largest healthcare insurer. Even so, prices here seem somewhat lower than in the UK (170 / 60 euros).
Does anyone have any idea when those glucose checking watches are going to be released for good (given the fact that version 1 was a let-down) Because I think that stuff would not involve any running costs except for the battery..
I found the video fascinating and the insight into how it has changed the management of your diabetes is interesting. Is the raw data downloadable or can you only use the supplied program to view it. You would be helped by reading this book. A type 1 patient since age 12, and now in his 70's. He began as an engineer, and then became a medical doctor. He was the first person to advocate BG monitoring by machine. He was told he was crazy. Price for sensors are simply riddiculous - electronics + subdermal needle asambley most likely costs only twenty cents to make. Even considering all the money spent on development and certification, I still believe that it costs no more than dollar, if we count numbers of these being manufactured. Medical devices are just plainly overpriced as f*ck. :(.
Great video as always and very informative. I have T2 and have to do regularly tests. My only worry was when you where driving and testing wouldn't that be classed as using an electronic hand held device I'm sure some over zealous officer would see it as a way to give you a fine and or points. (I know it a small silly point and you could do it at a red light with the engine turned off and hand brake on) Just saying. .
why dont they make only sensors with 14days drug in it and you can pair it with your phone app and if you are low you can press the drug release button and done That would be way easier just looking at the phone app and getting all the information rather than having another device with you all the time, charging and taking care of it I hope for that day!.
I'm not a diabetic but this was still fascinating. I'm SURE you would have mentioned it in the video, but I can't help wondering. whether you really need to have the scanner/display. Most smartphones nowadays have NFC built-in, so I wonder if you could replace the scanner with a smartphone app. One thing fewer to have to keep charging up. Then again, my Xperia lasts 45 days between charges with the cellular radio and wifi switched off but only 3 days with them on....
I have a 28 year old daughter who has had type one diabetes since she was one year old. We went through blood sticks and multiple insulin shots throughout her life. Her diabetologist believed in moderate control rather than strict control and was able to deal with her diabetes to the point where she is able to live without the sequela associated with long-term diabetes. She now utilizes an insulin pump which combines insulin delivery based on continuous blood sugar monitoring. This has her A1 C in the normal range .
Fantastic, I wish I could afford the monthly costs of the sensors. I also suffered hypos at night. Switched to taking long acting insulin in the morning. Solved the problem. I also have type 1 and other endocrine issues. .
I've been a subscriber for quite some time, and did not know you were a fellow T1. I've been T1 for 44 years (got it when I was 12). I used to test my urine when I was 12 for my sugar level. Much better (and far more accurate) now with the blood tester. Several people have asked if you can re-use the sensor, or make it last longer than 14 days. I'm pretty sure the reason for the 14-day limit is because there is a chemical on the sensor that reacts with your blood (or other fluid under your skin) and changes resistance, depending on the sugar level. The Libre reads this resistance and converts it to a blood sugar reading. The chemical finally "wears off", and the unit won't be accurate any longer, so you have to replace the whole assembly. Same reason you can't re-use your test strips. Do you know if Freestyle plans on releasing this in the States The only similar unit I know about over here is the Dexcom, and perhaps one other that is not as popular. Some users say the Dexcom's accuracy fades after six days. Techmoan: you didn't mention if you use an insulin pump or not. The screen on the Libre implies that you do, since it looks like you can set how much insulin you took. Or do you just inject the insulin before meals.

But insulin is also storing fat, so for type 2 diabetes, it would be better to cut down on carbs, then the person with diabetes wouldn't need insulin shots because he/she don't have high sugar levels in the blood stream. It's actually not at the level of the receptors but at the downstream signaling pathways that the defect in insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes is located... Although patients with inherited mutations in the insulin receptor gene that lead to reduced levels of the insulin receptor or with defects in the insulin receptor do exists (Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome and Donohue syndrome)..

I had gestational diabetes & it might sound weird but I was happy that I had it. I ate super healthy & had a great diet. My baby weighed 7lbs 10oz. :). I was the same way. I was diagnosed with GD at 20 weeks. So grateful for it. Sucks that I always had to watch what I ate and testing but I had a great pregnancy, only gained 14 lbs and had a healthy 6 lbs, 11 oz baby girl :). I go for my test in 2 days. 3/17/14 Can I eat or drink anything with sugar a day before I go this is my first pregnancy. I am 31 years old. my birthday is sept 7 and baby is due july 07. just wanted to give a little back graound.
With my first pregnancy, I had to take the glucose test three times! one at 15, 26, 33 weeks pregnant because I have PCOS which causes women to have higher insulin normally, so my dr just wanted to be sure I wasn't going to get it. not to mention my mother had GD with me. This pregnancy, I have a different doctor and she told me that when they give Hersey chocolate bars instead of a drink! I was like whatttt.
I was aloud to drink water And I had the big test because they consider me as hight risk for diabetes. It so different lol and yes the three hour test sucked too much needles ouch.... I didn't have to fast. I could eat but it had to be something with protein in it like eggs. So, I had eggs for breakfast, and I was asked if I wanted Lemon lime or Orange, and they gave it to me in a cup. Like you I had to drink with in 5 minutes, and wait an hour. My results came back normal :) .
I'm having my Glucose test tomorrow and I'm so nervous! I am super picky and I swear I'm a super taster. I'm always super nauseous and everything makes me so sick now. I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to keep it down for an hour! They told me that I didn't have to fast... I just can't have any sugar or breads.(Things that have sugar or turn to sugar.) I am going to eat some eggs before I go. Oh and they said I will have a choice between orange and lemon lime flavors. Ewe!.
With my first pregnancy I got the drink at my OB appointment and was able to take it home and refrigerate. My doc told me to drink it an hour before my next app and drink it within five minutes. So I was able to drink it cold BUT I was driving to the app when I drank it and I almost puked in the car HAHA!.. I just had my glucose test Monday! It came back great but my iron was also low! I have to take two iron pills a day!.
the 3 hour is so much worse. i passed out after the second blood draw. I was also anemic while prego with my boys. make sure you eat before you take your iorn pill it made me sick..

My midwife gave it to me to bring home and refridgerate it. I was told i could eat and i failed. I fasted for the 3 hour and passed. With my twins i fastes and passed the 1 hour. I will decline it next time.. Hey Missy! I too have a bicornuate uterus. I'm 27 weeks 3 days pregnant with a girl. I went in to take my glucose test when I was 24 weeks pregnant it was a 5oz drink I think... And I also had fruit punch! I got to take it home and kept it refrigerated and it burned my throat after the drink and made my heart race a bit. But I actually got my results within that hour! They pricked my middle finger (ow!) And thankfully NO GD for me(: but I am anemic! I take my iron supplement everyday.. This is my fourth baby so I knew what to expect. I did my one hour (didn't have a voice of flavor so I was given the Orange one which tastes like a flat orange crush) and failed. I had to fast but at ten at night, I had pineapple so I think that might have elevated my sugar level. I took the three hour test a few days later and was so nervous. It was freaking torture! But I'm happy to say that I passed my three hour!. I live in Canada and it was okay, I was very dizzy and fatigued that whole day, I had to drink half a can of orange soda and wait one hour, so I did it first thing in the morning. It turns out I had really low blood sugar throughout my pregnancy lol which is weird but it wasn't so bad. .
our drink isn't flavored where I am it's just a white bottle of non flavored not looking forward to it :(.
I'm not nervous about the actual test it's self... I'm upset about fasting for 12 hours an the chemicals in the drink. I do not drink dyed drinks to begin with so why do it for a test.. Then the fasting. I would pass out if I didn't eat. That can not be good for baby going with out water and such. Our body's need that. I'm 28 weeks and my midwife has never brought it up to me about doing the test. I'm trying o find alternative ways to take it....
When I took my glucose test, I had the orange one, it was in an 8oz bottle. To me it tasted like a melted popsicle. It was very sweet, and my stomach was so upset when I drank it. .
So interesting to hear how it's different in different areas, I didn't know that! Mine was like yours, the big warm bottle of juice haha. I actually kind of liked it :P.
my first glucose test the drink was fine to me ( orange small 8oz) but the down side it was a 6hour test yes 6hours since i have a high risk of developing diabetes both of my parents have it :( my dad died from it when i was 12 but on to the results, they found out that im hypoglycemic :( and i had a follow up to see if its the same but this time it was just 3hours and im still waiting on the results *fingers crossed* !!.

You should take the iron supplement with orange juice, also it takes a while for your iron to get all the way back up so just be patient. It took my a month or two to get up from 9.6 :). Oh the glorious glucose test! I too, had to drink a bottle, which was the orange drink and it was cold. They poured it in a cup for me. The orange drink tasted like McDonald's orange drink, but with a lot more sugar! I had to sit for an hour. When I got my results back, they were inconclusive, so I had to do it again!!!!! Lol.
In Poland you get a sugery drink (like, sugar in water, yyyyhhh). I was puking after 40 minutes, I think. Test failed, they had to do som kind of another test from my blood. Now I am 5 weeks pregnant and I am not willling to try again..
Mine was peach and room temperature :( I drank some and wa like oh this isn't thst bad then by the end I was forcing myself not to barf lol.
I failed with my first pregnancy and I am waiting for the results with this pregnancy. Mine tasted like orange flavored death! I was not given a choice in flavor.. I had midwives and with my test all I had to do was fast over night and then in the morning I had to eat eggs toast orange juice and milk, wait 3 hours and then I was able to get my blood drawn. I had no issues with taking mine LOL!! Glad yours came back perfect! . My midwife gave me the option to test my blood sugar levels every day for three times a day. That way I didn't have to drink all that sugar!.
For iron supplements it is best to take them on an empty stomach with some orange juice otherwise it doesn't absorb as well..

im in korea and the only option was orange, and it tasted like koolaid to me :) but i ended up with a headache for like 2 days after the test!. My drink was the orange one and it was cold. I passed!! And my doc let be have water during the night luckily!. People make it out to be such a bad expirence and its not at all. I think the only part that suck are you can teat and drink and you have to wait a hour, but doctors here in vegas have now started giving you the juice at your previous visit so you can drink it before you get to the office. Of course this happens after I've had three kids and am not having more haha.. Before you took the GD test as a pregnant woman it is tiring I'm only 11 weeks and I'm fatigued already were you fatigued.

Had my glucose test yesterday. Chose fruit punch as well. The bottle was quite a bit bigger than I remember my last pregnancy so towards the end of it I did get a little nauseas. Then waiting game got blood taken and I also had to get rhogam shot OUCH! They said they would call today only if their are abnormal results. Haven't heard anything yet.. Im 32 weeks pregnant and did my glucose test at 28 weeks. I had the fruit punch one but got to drink it cold which was pretty decent. I passed but I also found out my iron is low so Im on iron pills too :). I had the same type of drink as you except it was orange! When I went in and did my test I got super dizzy and sick right in the middle of my one hour wait!!! They were walking me to lay down in the back and I passed out cold so I had to stop the test and eat and drink water...they made me do the three hour test a week later! :-(. They did it with me laying down the whole time because they were scared I would pass out again! I passed wth flying colors but it was not a hreat experience!. I had the 3 hr test how I wasn't sick ill never know! But unfortunately I did have gestational diabetes but with healthy eating I managed to only put on 4lb in pregnancy and had my beautiful daughter who was 6lb 6 oz shocked as my older son was 9lb born so definitely thought I was having at least a 10 lb baby on my daughter! Lol.
We have the choice to take it with my midwives.. I have opted out unless I start showing signs, I am low risk though :) I live in Canada.
ask your midwife if you can eat jelly beans instead because you don't have to do the drink if you are seeing a midwife they will usually let you just eat something really sugary like jelly beans, a candy bar, or pancakes with lots of syrup. The Glucose Test is the only time that being diabetic is great!!! I didn't have to take it because I already take medication to control my sugar... I would die if I had to drink that stuff... . I had the exact same results as you did! I passed the GD test with flying colors, but my hemoglobin level was slightly low so I started taking an iron supplement. We registered at Babies R Us right after my appointment which was a horrible idea! I am glad you passed! . I failed my 1 hour then passed the 3 hour with my son. We'll see what happens with this pregnancy. I drank the orange drink and it gave me a super headache too..
I would recomend taking your iron tablet with either orsnge juice or a vit c tablet to help for Dapoxetine... i did do my glucose test I am 32 weeks along and this my forth pregnancy... the reqson I did not do the test isnow here in sustralia it is a 2 hr wait between the drink and the blood test...add that to thefasting there is no way my body could handle that with out feeling really sick... I still vomit but I need to eat as soon as I wake in the morning... I did find out that I to am.

My glucose test was horrible! I had blood taken then i had to drink a pint of lucazade which i hate then sit for 2 1/2 hours in the waiting room and then get blood taken i wasnt allowed to walk anywhere or even go to the toilet! I nearly wet myself :L.
The first test I only had to take like a small cup full, I failed the first test the second was the same bottle as yours, I got my blood drawn 3 times, and failed by 2 stinkin points! GD is horrible, depressing, dangerous.My boy was 9 pounds. .
I had the orange drink. Same amount you had but mine was cold and very hard to get down since it was. I didn't feel good after either. My results came back okay. I had to do a 24 hr urine because I had too much protein..

What happens simply is that the water that is present in the syrup becomes vapor with the heat and inflates the bubbles in the syrup. Putting glucose syrup in cakes won't inflate more your cakes-the water part does it; or other gases from baking soda, egg, yeast fermentation etc. But putting glucose syrup in cakes is better than putting sugar because sugar can burn slightly into caramel during baking but glucose will resist longer. And glucose is far more healthier than sugar!.

Hi I am 27. Today, they placed a cgms on my stomach at the clinic but never mentioned about that monitor to be connected with the censor. They asked me to go home with it and just note my sugar readings pre food intake for 3 days and get back to the clinic and they will remove the cgms and make the report. is it the right way they are doing or is it a wrong practice I have only been informed about this placement on my stomach and I can't even see the green light on the censor as it is covered with a white tape and above that is the same adhesive as in the video of a bigger size over it. well can someone help me clear this in my head .

Ge'ez why doesn't anyone put the damn sensor in then wait for the calibration. Take at bg test 10-15 before the look at what the cgm is reading. These videos are great but nobody is detail enough for the most important element of the product. That being the cgm. .
I just got this, I been on the pump for 10 years, this video was more helpful than reading the manual. Now I just have to figure out how to connect the sensor to the pump for the first time. Like put in the serial number or something like that.
I was given the old sensors like this instead of the Enlites. So this video is super informative. The Doctor can't get me in for training for another month and I am excited to start using them!.
Hopefully you will be eligible for an upgrade soon. The old version of the sensors are painful. The needle is too long, too painful at the angle they go in and the sensors don't last long. I took myself off the old sensors 2 years ago and refused to use it again. I threw 3 boxes of sensors away...my body is scarred from the use of those. I've just been upgraded to the Enlite sensors and I can tell you...it's a new experience. The insertions feels the exact same as if inserting a Mio infusion set. (If you aren't using those...try them!) The old version should be obsolete! Good luck to you! .

thanks for this video. i'm using injections right now, but i'm thinking about adding a CGM to my plan. it will be a hassle to deal with this process (if i were to get this particular device), but it will give me such valuable data concerning my current lifestyle and dosages. i just hate to be wearing something again (i was on the pump for about 8 years)..

My point was that type 1 has no chance of reversal unless some miracle cure is discovered. No offense was meant..

I recently started using a cgm and used the same kind of "adhesive" patch used in this video... It did not work well for me. The sensor got ripped out while i was at work. since then i started using Johnson and Johnson sports tape to keep it in place..
I hate that horrible giant thing! I've been diabetic long enough I can simply taste and feel to tell my sugar on my own. it's cool but a huge waste of money. I have a pump, but my goodness, all the stuff is too expensive.
I've done what you showed here, but after 15 minutes, it states SENSOR LOST. So, I'll command it to find lost sensor and then after 10-15 minutes, it will get lost again! Thoughts .
Agreed. Being lean and in shape I have a hard time getting it to stay in and work. Any time i exercised it would fall out. It was nice to have when it worked, but way to annoying and painful to wear..
This is a great video and I just wish I could've seen it-versus the Medtronic video, as I was able to insert my sensor into the serter BACKWARDS as the diagrams in the manual and even the video - did not make it clear enough to be sure which way to put them together. Luckily I realized the direction would not work for attaching the transmitter. The helpline at Medtronic made it sound like NO ONE ever did that backwards before!! In my next call she said "oh, people do that all the time"!!!.
So the monitor is the insulin pump, the transmitter and the sensor. I know how much the sensors cost, how much is the transmitter.

I am diabetic type 1 from Italy,starting to try sensor medtronic.I want to use the thigh for the sensor and abdomen for pump,because I don't want to wear out the skin of abdomen, but nobody tells me if I can use the thigh for sensor.In your opinion,is possible using thigh for the last medtronic sensor (the perpendiculare one with the serter in the shape of cupola). Update: I have been using my medtronic paradigm pump for a month now and my sugars levels have never been better! I'm about two weeks away from starting the CGM. Woo-hoo!. I'm so relieved to find your video. This is my first night with the CGM and I was horrified with the thing. Turns out I didn't know to take the insertion needle out until I saw you do it. Much better! Surprised also to see you do it on hour leg. I will have to try that. Best wishes! . What you are referring to is geared towards type 2's because in most cases they can reverse it. However type 1 CANNOT be reversed by any means as of now.. Steve I am having trouble placing it on my abdominal area I keep telling medtronic that it works and is easier to place on my thigh but they say it's not fda approved for those sites that only if a doctor says I should do it there. My sincere thanks to you guys for responding. I just found out that I am being "considered" for an islet of langerhans transplant. The islets produce insulin to replace those no longer functioning. This might potentially cure me; no more insulin injections. But I was also told I would have to be on anti rejection pill or pills the rest of my life. So is it worth getting a monitor and pump Because I feel like those things would get in the way when playing sports or exercising. Especially if you fell on them it might hurt a lot..
We are new to Dexcom, this is our second time putting the sensor in and both times there was blood that we could see in the plastic. The Dex Rep said that was normal, does this happen to you.
Thanks for this post - I'm a T1D since '67 - and just now trying out the CGMS (well - the good one - tried MM out - we didn't get along so well - stopped using it after 3 months). I've been given a Dexcom kit by an islet cell recipient (aka they're no longer injecting or a diabetic... way to go Edmonton Protocol) - so since she doesn't need it - and I do... I'm giving it a test run. If all goes well - the transmitter will still have some life in it (at $800 replacement it better!!!) - and hopefully I'' start to see how I'm doing with m new stage of life... menopause - hormones like I'm a teenager with T1D again... NOT... I'm all grown up now! .

what kind of extra adhesives do you use when you want to wear your CGM longer. I have tried several kinds and I'm not happy with them. please let me know what brand and type you are using.
Thanks for posting this. I started the Dex Monday and used this video instead of the one on their site for my first insertion (abs) and it worked great and am loving the dex. A couple recommendation I learned from the facebook dex group was to spray Floinase over the site first to prevent allergic reactions and itching and use skintac to help it stick better and both those suggestions helped. I appreciate the one on inserting it solo in the arm and will watch the video when I do my first site change. I also like the humor you add to the videos.
You can also use the Lock to remove the Transmitter from old used sensor base., In fact it was designed to do just that. Good Video. Thanks. I have huge reservations about being constantly connected. how often do u change to needle for the sensor that look painful btw. and when do you use this continuos monitor for during an exercise or do u keep it on all the time is there any health rise like infection..
+Tam Nguyen - it's a new needle for every sensor we put in. It's actually alot of waste when you think about it - but with that waste - comes a way for diabetics to have a good sense of how their diabetes control is coming along (every 5 mins is shown on the hand held receiver (which I use) - or via the Animas Vibe. It's worn 24/7. And no risk of infection, as the sensor that is placed within the subcutaneous fat of your body via that "wicked" looking introducer needle is only as thick as a strange of fine hair. BTW, I didn't feel the needle portion - but I've been T1D for almost 50 years - so maybe have a high pain threshold.
Thank you for your help! My daughter just got her Dexcom in today and I could not get the DVD that they sent to work! The nurse explained over the phone how to do it, but your video really helped!!!. Do you know of any diabetes support groups for a child with a non compliant juvenile diabetic mom or dad . I'm worried it will hurt when I apply it to my 4 year old. Any tips for placement and how to make it less painful for her.
ask your child's doctor for a prescription for lidocaine/prilocaine cream (might be over the counter too, not sure). it's a numbing agent. my parents called it "the magic cream" when i was little. for the cgm it takes away most if not all of the pain :).
Great video! My insurance FINALLY approved a Dex after months of fighting with them and hoping to have it tomorrow and have watched all the Dex instructional videos. I'll be sure to use this video instead of the dexcom video for the insertion.

This is a great video. I watched it because I'm going to test my dad's dogs. I have a diabetic cat so I'm pretty used to it. It was nice to see the dog being cooperative, my cat is like that, he just lays down and lets me do whatever I need to do. I just tell him that he's a dood boi about a 1,000 times lol. I test him on the ear and I use a sock filled with rice to warm the area and get a good blood flow before I prick the ear, it works really well..

I was just reading about the hypoglycemic risks of xylitol on dogs and seeing as I'm a type 1 diabetic was wondering how I would test her to know. sounds like I'll need different coded strips. also, I'm curious if you've explored feeding her a higher protein lower starch diet That's the way that I manage to maintain normal blood sugar for my condition (although I eat a lot of natural fats - but have read that dogs are actually high protein on their natural diets. Thanks for the tips. Had I not seen this I would have been trying to test on her ears.. Had a. Few successful tests on the ear one on the paw but many more failures than successes. My dog squirms a lot. Usually not enough blood is coming out or it does but she moves when we go to touch the strip to it. I'm not giving up but it is very upsetting when you poke 3 times and have no success. I've rubbed the spots to increase blood flow but still nothing. I've heard petroleum jelly helps it bead and stay in place but what can I do to keep the dog from moving Lol. Keeping at it but frustrated..

I was wondering since my chihuahua just got diagnosed being diabetic if this has saved you money from taking your dog to the vet multiple times during the week Last week she had what looked like a manor seizure bc there was too much insulin. Soooooo i had to go to the vet almost everyday to have her blood tested. I would love to be able to do this blood suar test at home. We found out that our dog has diabetes about 2 years ago and have been taking her to the vet to get her blood sugar tested - and therefore haven't been checking it nearly as often as we should. My cattle dog was just diagnosed with diabetes along with having cushings & autoimmune joint disease. So this wasn't welcomed. This dog loves to eat but I'm struggling to get her to eat in am/pm at all now. When diagnosed she was off the chart..they couldn't read it. Now they are trying to regulate it and all this week she had no interest in food, very lethargic, shake and disoriented, drunk like. They said that probably means she's low sugar but she had the same symptoms when it was high so what the heck. I know your not a vet but did you have these same issues I have to get her to eat so I'm at a loss as to what's going on. Vet won't let me test glucose yet...I have to do the urine/keytone/glucose strips. She doesn't want me freaking out if it's high (at one point 850) and says the sugar of a dog is always all over the place when diabetic so I would love any insight you and your wife have about your own personal experience. Did you have issues with not eating and extreme lethargy Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I think I'm going to try and get this meter from Amazon...hopefully I won't need a RX for it. My vet specialist was totally against me testing the blood for some reason, just wanted me to check the urine that's why I was freaking out...why wouldn't she want me to see the rest I ordered the unit but couldn't even get a good stick on here because of Anemia. Unfortunately my little girl has passed. The diabetes was just another condition to deal with. I don't think that was the end all... just everything else, Cushings, Autoimmune Disease and then she was loosing blood and becoming anemic and we didn't know from where it was coming. I felt so backed in a corner and couldn't bear to see her suffer which I believe had started. It's been very hard without her but I want you to know I as well as so many others truly appreciate you putting this information up and helping us through the process. wow, once again I reason to be glad that I almost always avoid fast food places and mostly cook at home. Being a type one diabetic i try to avoid fructose but high fructose corn syrup and or cane sugar is in almost every thing that you don't make yourself. You don't want to become obsessed with it but it is very good to keep processed foods to a minimum. I've noticed that eating fresh fruit does not have the same effect on blood glucose readings as as many processed foods have so I don't worry about the fructose in fresh fruit especially because the veggie intake is bigger than the fruity intake. I think moderation is the proverbial key but avoiding fast food eateries can be taken to an extreme without hurting yourself. :):) Pink slime, high concentrations of fat, sugar in absolutely everything, what's not to avoid.

Fructose has been shown to be less healthy than glucose, however typical HFCS is actually lower in fructose to glucose ratio than many/most other sugar mixtures such as in many fruits (not all) or honey. It's called "high fructose" because normally corn syrup is very low in fructose, but the production process converts some glucose to fructose. It's done because fructose tastes sweeter. That said, honey does have a fair bit of maltose, and I'm not sure how that reflect on one's health. I OBJECT! Saying table sugar is 50-50 glucose fructose isnt entirely accurate, sure it is technically true, but the glucose fructose molecules are arranged as disaccharides, which means table sugar exists as 100% SUCROSE. While yes Sucrose is metabolized into fructose and glucose once it enters the body, I have yet to see specific research into the possible biological processes triggered by that metabolic conversion. I demand studies comparing rats fed with sucrose against rats fed with equal amount of a 50- 50 fructose glucose blend to analyze any special effects sucrose as a disacharride has on the body.

His technique for testing was very good, the same as a nurse would do in a hospital. . well in sweden you start learning english when you're 7 or 8 and you end learning english when you stop going to school. But depending on line you choose for your gymnasium () might get you continuing learnibg more complicated.

On the other hand, if you're buying an existing home for your homestead, the last place you want to buy is in the county with the most lenient building codes. My stepmom ended up with an owner-built house that has light switches that get really hot to the touch, bathtub overflows that dump water into the walls, and a second floor that almost collapsed because the supports were undersized. All which were not discovered by a housing inspection.. +gayle2020 True.. wish my stepmom had done that, but it is in a remote location on a lake. The view sold her. .
And don't forget if you plan on having animals to check the codes for that also. Some allow chickens but not pigs or goats or cows and some allow nothing. Some will allow hens but no roosters. And some counties will allow everything but put a limit on how many animals you can have per acre..
You forgot to mention that when you find a town with the lowest property taxes, remember people your fire, police and ambulance are all run by the town generated income. Me personally, I would look for a town that had a solid fire department (not volunteer). If you are living 2 miles down a dirt road, where exactly is the fire department suppose to hook up to water to put your burning house out Two thousand person towns also have volunteer "Mayberry" police departments. If you ever need to call the police you don't want to wait 45 minutes for them to show up. A town with two thousand people living it, most likely does not have a ambulance service ( they are funded by the towns tax payers dollars ) that little towns don't have. If you need a ambulance for a emergency, be prepared to wait (hopefully your not having a heat attack). So while living off grid, away from the rat race of a city is wonderful. A person does not have to choose the cheapest tiny town that tax payers have dirt cheap home-owners taxes. There is wonderful raw land that is far enough off a main road in decent towns where homesteading is fine. May cost a little more, property taxes will be a little higher, but having the security and peace of mind knowing the fire department, police and ambulance are only minutes away can make he difference if your house burns to the ground, or the ambulance didn't get to you or a family member fast enough. THESE are the things I would consider before I plop a off grid homestead in a tiny town that has dirt cheap property taxes. That is exactly WHY the taxes are so cheap! You are not paying for emergency departments.. Most small towns use pumper trucks to fight fires as there is no city water and residential well pumps could never put a full force fire out. There are positives and negatives to country living, it doesn't sound right for you but a lot of people enjoy it and don't mind.
+Mandi C I DO live in a rural "country area" with many small family owned farms around me. And have lived in the same location for 30 years. I am also a very successful vegetable gardener that supplies a local farm stand. BUT, I also live in a area that that our property taxes support a fire department, police department and ambulance service, all in our small town. While "country living" is great, there are important issues that seriously need to be considered before buying the cheapest piece of land you can possibly find. For me personally, the location I put my home on was the most important factor to me. It was a good land choice, I am still living on it 30 years later..
Make sure the land is high and dry if you're in Florida. We had a lot of flooding one year and I saw water standing in the homes only a couple of blocks away. Get out and look in the ditches around the area you are interested in. If you see liquor and beer bottles plus other trash, you can bet there's trouble near by. One or more of your neighbors could be druggies or drunks or both driving up and down your roads..
The best place to buy your land is where your heart is. If your dream is homesteading, than anyplace you're happy, is going to work. But, really valid points you made...good tips for sure!.
If it's not bank financed, don't buy a house on ur property, cause you don't get the protections. Best is hire a contractor and tell him you want to make a major remodel. He'll come up with the problems...guaranteed! I like contractors cause they understand buildings. Or get a contractors license yourself..

Why would Becky care about her chicken's personalities Doesn't she send all of her animals off to be slaughtered anyway. Great post, Becky. The dirt road comment resonated with me. Our drive is about 1 mile of bumps and ruts! Nerve wracking AND costly just as you said. We are on our third set of motor mounts and need new CV joints. Another thing you mentioned is living by a river but not a flood zone, A creek that runs year round is nice. I love your videos! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.. +Oak Creek Farm on a homestead you should have a tractor (or a neighbor) & just run a box blade down out every few months.. Thanks for bringing up dirt roads. Some are nice, some are downright terrible and should be marked for 4wd only! If it's maintained by the state, they're usually in really good condition, with well drained ditches on each side and grated on a regular basis. I've driven down some washboard roads that would rattle your damn teeth out they were so bad. Very rough on your vehicles, too. Wreaks havoc on all of your steering and suspension components, plus getting your cage rattled can damage other parts of your car or truck, working things loose. You also don't want to live down a dirt road that turns into a hog waller mud pit when you get a good rain. A 2 mile road might as well be a 200 mile road if your car can't drive down it after a typical summer afternoon thunderstorm..
Low taxes could mean problem areas. (Flooding, remote, no jobs) For us we like the dirt roads and counting the deer on the way home. Living out where we live also means that when/if someone comes to our house they are either 1) lost, 2) up to no good, or 3) got directions from us as to how to get there. We like it that way..
Do be-ware that if you choose a county that is leanent in their building codes you could also end up in a county where a lot of not so good to look at things are "allowed." I know this first hand as I was looking for lower taxes and as a result I ended up in a county with lower property taxes yes, but where there are also only a few ordinances and structures are not maintained. (I did not expect this because my life experience was if you owned a home, you maintained it.) This means trashy trailers, piles of junk outside of structures, houses and structures that are not kept up, empty abandoned structures, and generally poorer people who cannot afford to keep their homes up. This effects your everyday living as well as the future values and sale of your property too. You might think, so what I not planning on selling out...but you never know what the future may bring, esp. with aging..
