It would be better if he showed you with his rifle Zeroed in at 100 yards & then shooting at distances at above say 500 yards & with the Adjustment on the scope shown, after all most shooting center's are at least 500 yards with Target's. some people get it straight away once shown in real life.. It also depend's on who has sighted in your rifle, normally a good sniper platform, would have a the rifle sighted in at least around 500 yards & depending on the type of rifle he has, then you have all the other factors like wind, Rain, Heat snow all these are factors on what the bullet is doing at above the sighted in rifle & if you have a good scope & know how to adjust the scope based on the conditions only then with practice & more practice you become perfect with the sniper platform you have or Rifle & scope & ammo used. Also don't forget the Powder used & your projectile values as well, if you self load your own ammo, look at the data provided based on what is going to happen to the projectile based on the Rifle & scope your are using. Also i don't own a gun & an important issue is try to have a spottor with the right equipment to tell you what the bullet or projectile is doing once you have shot a a distance, but you should be able to see the vapor trail through the scope as well & impact point, then work out the rest. cheers, great upload as well. thanks.. this theory would also apply to Mrad correct as in if it's zeroed at 100m, 200m is 2cm, 300m is 3cm etc..
Im still a little confused, let's say I have an AR15 and I want to zero it at a 100 yards, however, I only have 25 yards range. So if everything is perfect, at 25 yeards if I hit 4 inches high then my rigle should impact where it suppose to be at 100 yards.
+Tuan Nguyen Incorrect. Sights on a rifle make it so that they are perfectly/zeroed for a particular distance. If you want a 100yd zero then the angle of the barrel will mean that the bullet is still coming up to meet the line of sight for any distance less than 100yd. For example with an AR15 if you shoot the target point blank with the muzzle touching the paper your sight line will probably be 3-4 inches above the barrel/impact point. For what you want typically with an AR15 style rifle shooting normal 5.56/.223 you want to be aiming dead center on the target at 25 yds and be hitting 1.5-2 inches low on the impacts. That should get you pretty dead on when you go out to 100yds.. I watched this yesterday, I'm watching it again today. Gonna burn it into my brain. Mostly because the guy in this video, Ryan, speaks with such ease and clarity. Most people in YouTube videos annoy the crap out of me and I lose interest...thanks Ryan, you rock!.
do all scopes work in inches in my country we are taught in meters, does that mean scopes are in meters and if so, what are the changes great video.

on my m1a one click = 2 inches at 200 yards right what dose time have to do with it when I was in the army in 79 " M16 " they dident talk about MOA.
It's easy to understand you, I use to be so confused and thought in yards instead of minutes of angle. Thanks.
For those of you wondering how much your bullet drops. Go to the horn ash calculator. It's good.
+MMBNMalternateaccoun My rifle was fairly easy to sight in. At default the rifle shot about 12 inches high at 150 yards and about 4 inches to the right. So I just used the measurements on my scope turrets to adjust my aim. Now I can shoot 1-2 inch groups at 200 yards. My rifle is a Savage Axis chambered in.223 with a Boyd's stock and a bi-pod. Lovely rifle. .
+MMBNMalternateaccoun your over thinking this moa. is a constant. It does not mater how many clicks =1moa if it's a 1/2 moa 1/4moa or 1/8 moa. you just need to remember that you will need to move 8 clicks instead of 4 to move it an inch. With 1/8 moa scopes you are able to fine tune point of impact more precisely..

wow, this guy is a great teacher, he knows exactly how to relay information to people in a way that they can understand! fabulous job Ryan!!!.

Fantastic video. I watched several others and came away feeling a bit dumb. Your video on the other hand clarified key points in concise and easy to understand manner. In addition, you provided all the necessary knowledge to take with me to the range and immediately start applying. Subscribed and looking forward to your other videos. Keep up the stellar work!.

Something I don't get is if someone says there gun shoots a 1 moa at 300 yards. Is that a 3 inch group Or a 6 inch group Keep in mine a minute can be both left and right one minute and still be a minute, but shooting 2 minutes from shot to shot. Anybody.

wow this is much like trigonometry. so this was a real simple but effective video. thanks I really feel like I can use this knowledge effectively thank you sir for taking the time to explaining how to use a scope properly. no more guessing lol.
what about when you are going back to a 100 yard target after shoot at a further distant do you just turn the scope back the same number. Great tutorial..I'm 15 and a slightly newer shooter who normally shoots out to 200 and 500 yards mostly... club gun scopes are always off the zero and this has greatly helped me fix that issue and actually practice rather than wasting ammo. οκ 1ΜΟΑ In 100yards- equals 1 inch... can someone tell me that in metric system 1MOA in 100 meters-equals ___.
Very very good explanation!!! I'll be checking out your other videos and probably subscribing Thank you.
Great video. There's an AP called Ballistic AE that you can purchase for $20. I was skeptical at first, but you can select the exact bullet that you have from any caliber, input the muzzle velocity, and even add the Coriolis, wind, and even elevation to help produce how many MOA you need to adjust for at any distance. I also like it that you can select the increments to the distance that you are shooting so that you know exactly what to do. $20 sounds like alot for an app, but it looks very helpful.. thank you mr. Cleckner for your sharing your knowledge. now I have question I know how to do the math for increments of 100 yards, now if my target come out at say 363 yards, at 375 my chart shows that my bullet drops 24.6 inches so what divided by 24.6 inches equals my moa. I've watched several of your videos, Ryan, and you make it all so simple! You are an excellent teacher. I've shot iron sights all my life ( just a recreational shooter) and now that I'm getting more serious, my toys need scopes and you are teaching me how to set them up and how to use them! Thanks a million, Ryan!. +A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge It is interesting to see how people differ, I've shot iron sights all my life and use the scopes for fun. My dad made me and my brother be proficient at iron sights before we were even allowed to have a scope. This was the case for every rifle we had, we had to shoot "expert" with iron sights on that firearm before we were allowed to add optics. To this day I only have 1 rifle with optics and that is only because we lost the rear sight years ago. I consistently get better groupings with iron sight out to 200 yards than I do with a scope. I can also line up a shot just as fast or faster than some of my friends who only use optics..
I have been taking a couple of my friends to the range for the last couple weeks to shoot at the 600 yard line. They all shoot the Remington 700 VS or PSS in.308 with 26" barrels... using the 175 gr matchkings. They are starting to get some decent scores with very limited help from me. I have shared this video with them and this video was very easy for them to understand. Thank You NSSF for posting this!.

Hello, I'm sorry if someone has ask this and I missed it or if it is a stupid question, but I wanted to know one thing. Is the MOA factored in for the curvature of the earth or to reflect the effect of gravity or neither I never heard you say and that would help me understand better. I took physics in college so I am guessing the curvature of the earth, but I would like to be sure. Great video. Thanks,.

Hi ryan not a problem my friend lol, thank you very much for your knowledge and making my shooting much more fun,if anyone is reading this, please listen to ryan and just keep watching it over again and it will all make sense and it is fairly simple trust me!!!.
so if I need to zero my rifle at 50 yards and it's 4 inches low. and I know 1 moa at 50 yards is 1/4. my scope adjusts 1/4 moa at 100 yards how many clicks would I need I'm sorry I watched this video 10 time and I'm confused on 50 yard moa. Great info. I was wondering on how to adjust for a target if your shooting down hill or up hill at long or short range. Excellent video. Simplified moa a lot. 82 thumbs down are the 82 people who can't do simple math!!!.
Use Kentucky windage. A flat shooting round will also help. Start playing with your scope and your target won't be there for the next shot. I zero my rifle for 100 meters and carry a metric table for windage and elevation in 50 meter increments..
I get the part of those distances and minutes of angle but what i still don't get is what the distance of the mildot's is based on. For my scope at the zoom 14x i know that 1 mildot equals 1 minute at 25 yards. Because that is my shooting distance to practice in the garden.( Hawke sidewinder 30sf 8-32 x56 20x half mildot). So for my case with the Zoom 14x 25 yards 1 mildot= 100yard 4mildot's right. 14x zoom : 4 (mildot's) would be 3.25x zoom to make 1mil equal 1inch at 100 yards ! Great !! But my scope's lowest zoom is 8x now that's confusing. Is there a theory for this or should evreybody just get to know his own scope .
+moekakke don't know if this will help you but 1 mil is roughly 3.6 inches at 100 yards so at 1000 yards 1 mil is 36 inches or 1 yard. He has another video on mil-dots that might help out a bit more.

Ok but by what magnification Or is the mildot always based on 0 mignification For my scope (hawk sidewinder) it would be by the zoom of 3,75x that equals 1 minute/mildot at 100 yard. I'll check the video thanks !!.
The bullet actually drops faster at the end of the arc primarily because gravity is accelerating the bullet to higher downward speeds. It has little to do with the horizontal speed of the bullet.. How do you find out how many inches the bullet drops at each distance to begin with He knows his drops 15 inches, where and how did he get that information That should be an important part of this demonstration because I personally have no idea. I would like to know so I can follow the rest. wow..i learned more in the first 1:30 then i did reading and trying to understand this concept over the past week haha. this guy is fantastic!.
+Ryan Cleckner That paper you printed to wrap around the turret. How did you do that and make it tight.
+Neo Prepper You could. That is certainly a faster way to adjust for elevation. However, when you also hold left or right for windage, you'll have the target floating off in the clear space of your scope. By adjusting for elevation and holding for windage, at least the target will always be on the horizontal reticle..
i only have experience shooting my fathers 1954 russian sks with a psl scope thoses scopes are so nice built in rangefinder thanks for the info.

I almost never comment on Youtube videos, but I felt compelled to on your explanation of MOA. You are an excellent instructor sir and I appreciate your videos. Well done....
I'm an engineer and do math all the time...This was an OUTSTANDING explanation!! Well done!!!! .
Hi guys I'm planning to to shoot medium to long range in 308 but I'm really itching between savage110 or remington 700. Any recommendations is appreciated. .

Ryan I have been watching your videos for years and they have helped very much. however the more I have trained I'm starting to wonder why any scope would have the turrets in MOA and the reticle in mils why is it not more common to simply have your reticle match your turrets for example MOA reticle and MOA turrets or mils turret and mils reticle thank you very much..
wow, i heard this MOA thing like, 20 minutes ago, for the first time, and know I know what it is and how to calculate it. Dude, this guy is an amazing teacher.... So in theory, you could reverse the MOA and figure out at a 100 yard range exactly where the bullet should hit the target ranged for 400yd, if you know the drop of your cartridge right . Great video, well presented; Thanks! Also, great questions, comments and support from the community. Great too that so many are open to state what they (we) don't know or understand without feeling embarrassed or being chastised. A key point to reinforce; gravity (the vertical vector force) acts on all objects the same per unit of time. Therefore the individual characteristics of a bullet in flight (flight arc) are tied to its initial velocity and drag coefficient (friction). Given an initially horizontal flight path, all bullets fired at the same height will hit the ground at the same time (i.e., same inches of drop/sec (vertical velocity)); some just get further away (horizontal velocity)..
This is the best discussion and demonstration of MOA I've seen. I already had a basic understanding (navigating my boat offshore) but your video just helped me to really gain a great grip on it for shooting.. Thanks for your time and effort....
1MAO =100 yards=1inch. It hits 1 inch below at 25 yards. IT depends on how many click it take to get 1 MAO. Say 1 click is 1MAO try turning it 1 click and see what happens. I just watched this video so I'm not sure lol It's been 5 months so you probably figured it out already..
hi, is this completely independent of what zoom you have on your scope concenred as mine is variable so does 1 moa not affect different for each zoom graduation Thanks Tom Great vid, finally got my head around it after a few watches!.
This is independent of zoom. The angle is the same and three inches are still three inches, even if you zoom in on them. Zoom would only have an effect if you used a MOA / mil-dot reticle for estimations. That would be a slightly different topic..

    Comments about this video:

awesome shooting bro, very informative video, what kind of scope are you using and is it a mil dot scope.
wanna shoot a carbine in 45 acp I would say the 357 Sig would be much more interesting to shoot over range.
I know I am probably going to sound like a retard, but this scope sounded like it was difficult due to all the knobs and all the numbers and lines and stuff..
Sean, This is Coloray. So funny to see you on youtube. All I ever do is watch informative videos of LR shooting these days. Neat to see your videos. Im going to try to find your number. THis is funny..
Sean its Shaun lol thanks fer the video very informative!!!! i just bought the Vortex viper 4x16x64 i have never had this nice of scope before and was a little intimidated by it at first as funny as that sounds until i watched your video so thanks fer helping out a fellow Redneck new to the turat world!!!.
Can you get a 45 acp carbine rifle and see exactly how far and accurate you can use it...I'm really interested in that rounds capabilities. +tige reese Those are not very good for long distance..45 ACP is a bulky heavy round that drops off fast and doesn't have a whole lot of powder behind it. It CAN hit something thats 500 yards away. but you'd be aiming crazy high and you'd have to know how to compensate for a lot of factors. Reliably, i'd say you're only going to hit 150-200 yards consistently, max.. How do you calculate the seconds On the ballistic chart its in milliseconds Or did I just miss it . +Anthony Bland Thats not a McMillan Stock, im pretty sure thats a Bell & Carlson Medalist A5 stock.. No, the "magnum" sniper rifle in counter strike is the Accuracy International AE MKII, also known as the "arctic warfare super magnum". It is designed specifically for special forces militaries around the world and is most commonly chambered in.338 Lapua Magnum and will be fitted with a Schmidt and Bender PMII 5-25x56 scope. The rifle in this video looks like a Remington 700 chambered in.308 with a Macmillan Stock and a Millet LRS-1 6-24x56 scope. Hope this helps.. Excellent tutorial and excellent video for a reasonably new shooter-me. Perfect balance of detail and info. Thank u.
question from I-don't-have-a-clue-guy: I see snipers aiming for example 2 gnodges (or whatever) to the right and one gnodge up. Meaning they don't aim at the target with their crosshair but rather aim with the "imaginary" point in the scope they calculate. So in the scope it looks like they aim above and for example right from their target..
+Claudio Cadalço yea, oh wells. xD. yea i only know at most, some sniper techniques as of now. I have never put them into practice yet though. . Rifle looks like a Remington 700 SPS chambered in.308 with a Macmillan tactical stock. Scope is definitely a Millet LRS-1 6-24x56mm with a 35mm tube. I have this same scope and it's turrets are unmistakable from any other high powered scope..

I agree with the clips and magazine education by albdavidt, but he also needs a lesson. Rounds go in muskets and flintlocks, cartridges go in modern weapons.. What are your thoughts on making a video showing how you painted your rifle I've been considering painting mine and I really like the pattern on your rifle..

We are finally getting somewhere with this reply from you. I'm glad you can agree that it would make it harder for someone to kill a room full of people with a non projectile weapon than with a gun. Serial Killer-someone who murders more than three victims one at a time in a relatively short interval. That means it's a repeated offense, whereas people shooting up a school or a mall "use guns for mass murder are always caught or killed", meaning it only happens one time. .
BTW, please quote where you got the idea that i think "you can only kill efficiently and en mas w/ a firearm", perhaps that will make your argument more convincing..
Theres a formula that you use that takes account for bullet weight, velocity, rotation of the bullet, and bullet flight time so that you know how far the bullet will drop then thats converted to MOA.
So, complete novice here. How do you determine the Drop value of 9 and the Spin value of (I think you said) half.

is also become known as the same thing as a magazine. It really doesnt matter what you call it. call it a flilly flopper as far as I care. My father was a marine an they always called them clips he told me. I remember him telling me a gun store worker tired to " correct" him in a way of being rude and my dad told him " well in the marines we trained to kill people and called it clips" meaning could care less about performing the technical correct term. Correcting is ok if its respectful. .
Speaking of people only thinking about themselves, your pattern of thought exhibits that same behavior. You seem to expect everyone to know the intricacies of combat because it's survival of the fittest right Would it be fair for a doctor to say everyone needs to know the intricacies of modern medicine, because if you don't know how to cure yourself when you're sick then you deserve to die.
Great, informative video. I like the modified indian sitting position you demonstrated, will have to see If I can pull it off with my stockyness. Subbed your channel. Thanx again. .

How do you determine the amount of minutes in X amount of yards Is there some formula you do in your head sry, don't know that much about sniping..

Is this a Millett scope if so how far have you shot it accurately and is it very dependable I have a Millett 6x25x56 lrs-1 on a savage 110ba.338 Lapua magnum and haven't got to shoot it far yet BTW nice vid.

and someone can stop a shooter/attack with ease if you carry a gun instead of a baseball bat or knife, what is your point theirs 2 sides here. the attacker and victim and the odds never play in the hands of both sides. funny how you only hear about the people that kill a bunch of people and kills them self, but you never heard about when a armed person kills a attacked before a killing spree happens. how funny....

If you are going to debate with me, at least have the decency to read the premise of the debate instead of taking things out of context. I will reiterate the premise, I'm talking about children shooting up a school, or someone shooting up a mall. That is a very specific criteria for the argument. So yeah, 9/11 doesn't count in my argument..
Where in any of my responses did i compare SA to Auto Please quote where i said such a thing. The only instance that Auto assault rifle came up was the scenario about a regular joe shooting up a room of 30 or so people. No where in that scenario did i mention SA firearm. I will be ending the argument, because you keep taking things out of context, making things up, and making baseless assumptions about me, who i am, and what i stand for..
Sigh... It's always what you can do huh Did you not read the part that not everyone went to Ranger school If you're a ranger then i implore you to take your time to read what i wrote. I was comparing guns to non projectile weapons, such as a baseball bat. You on the other hand are comparing hand guns to rifles... Good luck to you if you read your mission objectives the way you read posts here..
If everyone is carrying a gun because they fear other people with guns, then it will be tantamount to a civilian arms race. Perfect example is you "buy[ing] a fully automatic SAW", and some guy with a handgun feels his weapon is inadequate and also buys a SAW. Do you see where this is going Where does it stop When we're all driving a M1A1 tank to work and the grocery store When we goto a baseball game looking like RamboWhen we have a small nuclear device on our backpacks everywhere we go . First off the rings are on the way I want them on just like my bipod. My bipod flips forward or backward and I flip them backward because I can reach them better when prone. Next time I make a video I will put one ring opposite of the other just to make everyone mad. Yeah I knew that. As I posted the question mark for that statement. but I still think the ring knobs are best on the other side but to each his own. If it works. And I see it does then rock it out. .
Those values are calculated based on atmospheric conditions (temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, etc.) and known variables of the rifle/ammunition (scope height, barrel length, rifling profile, powder charge, manufacturer data for the ammo, etc). You can either use a ballistic calculator or published data for the ammo as a start and verify it with testing..
He Sean I'm confused about something on your video of shooting 1900 yards. I don't understand how you have 67 something moa of drop and your bullet drop is 109 inches. I don't understand how those match up. If you take 67x19 it's like 7,000. I guess I just don't get how 67 moa = 109 yards at that long of a range.

    Comments about this video:
Awesome idea for a series! Thank you for keeping the noobs in mind. There is so much hog wash and arrogance and bias out there. It is hard to learn these things if you don't have anyone to show you the way. I have been following your channel for couple of years now and really enjoy your videos and value your opinions. I am trying to get into precision shooting and it is TOUGH to get things right! I have a beautiful Savage Model 11.308 with the heavy varmint barrel. I have a crap scope and very little knowledge when it comes to setting up a scope, and am on a seriously low budget. Thanks for your videos and representing the firearms community in a positive, respectful way!. Check out the super sniper scopes from swfa I have 2 16 power one mil dot one mil radOn high end rifles, funtion perfectly, 300 bucks each, I also have some high end scopes and the ss run right along with the best.
Also something to consider with 6.5 creedmore is barrel life. I just built my first bolt gun and was torn between 6.5 and 308. The thing that sealed the deal for me was 6.5 barrel life is generally around 2.5-3000 rounds whereas 308 is upwards of 8000 or more for similar quality barrels. Also I was thinking of shooting silhouette competitions and a friend who has been doing it a long time told me that 6.5 has a lot of trouble knocking down the 500 yard steel..
+RJ Lee just be more tactile about clarifying. Just hate any argument that start of misunderstandings. It must be the moderator in me.. just sitting here chilling waiting for episode 2... no hurry we can weight. Love the video though..
Excellent Work ! Shared On " The Ruger Precision Rifle " Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheRugerPrecisionRifle/.

the most consistent scope for clicks in the cheap range that I have seen is the weaver tactical series... No matter what clicks you put on it it will always be accurate and it will return to zero without any worries. I have a 3x15 on my stag arms varminter and I can hit half moa out to 700 yards with hand loaded rounds... for a gas gun it is a beast and doesn't break the bank... my loading set up isn't cheap though and I take a lot of care producing consistent ammo... my velocity spread is only 7ft per second in five shots so the sd's are incredible..

is there a clear advantage in using a rifle to shoot a target say 600meters with a rifle zeroed for a range close to that number vs using a rifle zeroed further..say 1500m.
I have the 28 inch Encore Pro Hunter barrel on order. Looking at Hornady Whitetail Deer information I found out the range data on the box is from a 24 inch barrel. Would you know how much the 4 inch difference makes.
+devin conner that will depend on what caliber you're gonna be shooting and to some extent what velocity you're pushing those bullets at..

for inexpensive quality optics I am surprised you didn't mention the SWFA SS line of scopes!! they are considered by many to be the best scopes for the $, and actually one of the best scopes period. research them on youtube and on the SWFA.com site. they are military grade spec, durable, accurate, and repeatable. I own 4 $300 fixed power scopes to save on $ and have been thoroughly impressed with all. I wont buy anything else although I am going to eventually have one of the variable power scopes for more flexibility. those are only $750. I believe they rival scopes costing 5-8 times as much. I have convinced Leupold owners having problems with their scopes on the range to give one a try and they came back to me thanking me for the info. Make sure u buy new or very recently made SWFA scopes tho, because the SWFA Super Sniper (Different than the SS) went through a period of poor quality control due to previous company cutting corners due to financial difficulties. New company-new scopes-excellent quality. If you get the earliest model Super Snipers they are good, but if you get one produced during the bad phase you may get a lemon. Don't take the chance and buy new or recent SS scopes only!!.
+Colestercamps I agree with you here I would rather use a Nikon, great optics for the price. Brighter and more crisp then the swfa's but not nearly as expensive at the swarovski. all three have repeatable turret adjustments.. I love Nikon I personally prefer Swarovski I like them better but I have a few nikons and they are just as good they make amazing glass some people argue even the clearest glass . Yea its not for a long range rifle. I'm just saying that 900 dollars is a lot of fuckin money...unless ur rich, then its just pocket change. I don't, for the life of me, understand why, with Remington's waning reputation, that is the first name out of peoples mouth when it comes to affordability. Poppycock! Savage Arms should be what flies out because you will have singlehandedly removed the cost of a gunsmith and that adds up quickly!. It's a great cartridge. I have a couple 300WM rilfes and they're great for long range shooting, especially with the 190-220gr bullets. It's not inexpensive, but it's still cheaper than.338 Lapua..
One of the things I like about 300 Win Mag is that wind and wind corrections becomes much smaller factor for anything under 800 yards in my experience. Its probably even less of a factor out 1000 yds or greater in a better shooters hands..

+Eddie.308 7mm rem mag is an excellent long range cartridge. It will out perform most 300 win mag cartridges at long range. Only downside is it is more expensive than 6.5 creedmoor.

whats yalls thoughts on the mossberg mvp lc. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Mossberg174-MVP-LC-Light-Chassis-Bolt-Action-Rifle-and-Vortek-4-16x44-Scope-Combos/1955914.uts.
Not sure why, but I did not hear talk of the 7mm which has some of the best BC's for long range shooting. Any thoughts Peace, Reese.
hi everyone, I'm a young United States Marine, I and getting stationed in sandiago. I'm interested in learning long range marksmanship can anyone help.

+Military Arms Channel is there any cheap 6.5 creedmoor ammo I know the match ammo is cheap but is there any regular target ammo out there .
Great video Tim! Perfect timing as I have recently got the long range fever! I finally picked up my SCAR 17s and can't wait to get some videos up on it. Great video as always... Keep on keepin on! . +Military Arms Channel The price was just right. My LGS had 9.. yes 9 in stock! I'm looking for the right optic now and stocking up on Federal GMM. I am trying to replicate a load recipe for the GMM as well. Thanks again for such awesome videos! I hope to meet you one day. Take care brother. .
+GunsNsuch You might consider this thread on the FGMM load recreation http://forum.snipershide.com/snipers-hide-reloading/213496-sleuthing-federal-gold-medal-match-load-mk-316-mod-0-a.html.
its funny you guys are talking about caliber choice my opinion stay with the standards i have seen to many wild cat rounds come and go what stays 243.25.06 270 30.06 223. the 308 i dont think much of it sucks as a hunting round not many bullet choices or powders when NATO drops it its going to fall off the face of the earth 30 cal magnums are a joke they are not much better than a 30.06 200 or maybe 300 fps faster than a 30.06 with 150gr to 180 gr and up and the price for ammo is oh boy dig deep my choice for a magnum rifle 338 win mag pushing a 200gr to 250gr bullet just as fast and flat or maybe flater than a 30.06.
Yea and a 20 round box of.338 Papua is $65.00... I'm so tired of these people talking about "get a.338 lapua!!!" Tall are the same people that have a 78 inch flat screen TV in your 100 square foot living room.

Why does youtube bother with the like and dislike buttons Do we really need to know that someone likes or dislikes our videos I think the views a video gets says enough along with the comments. On this video, the likes far outweigh the dislikes but still 40 plus people had to make their opinion known that they did not find all aspects of a video to their liking even though the creator of the video put his time, effort and knowledge into making and sharing it. Sorry bout the rant just seems pointless. .
I have traded all my Leupolds in for Nikons on all my hunting rifles. The Monarch 3 series is a great optic. I have a mil dot on a 4.5-16 on my.257wby, I agree the BDC is a stupid reticle for long range shooting unless you buy a round specific turret. The amount of light the scope lets in is unreal and makes dusk shooting with confidence a breeze. I am taking down pop cans with that rifle at 500+ from a sandbag, factory wby ammo. If I were picking a tactical long ranger, I would go with a NightForce, but for medium range shooting, you really can't beat Nikon, and I have owned a few VX3's. Glass is second to none, made at the same facility as their reputable camera lens glass, superb Japanese quality, a great price and all the higher models come with a coupon for a free custom turret and lifetime warranty for around 500 bucks Sign me up.. Hello, GREAT VIDS> Quick Question. I am trying to pick out my next scope. I have around $3000 to spend, its going on a Desert Tech in 6.5 Creedmoor and.338 Lapua, it will regularly be shot at 1000 yards and am going to try to get out to 1 mile this year. I was using a 3-18x42 IOR Valdada which is good, but wanted to upgrade to a higher magnification scope this year. It's tough without actually getting to try them out so can you help I'm torn between the IOR Valdada Recon 4-28x50, Kahles K624i, US Optics ER25, or should I sepnd more and look at the Nightforce Beast 5-25x56 or Scmidt and Bender PMII 5-25x56. Problem is I get eye fatigue and headaches after a full day of shooting with the Valdada even after taking time to adjust the focus, maybe chromatic aberration or lense issues Thanks, JAckson.. I work at a gun store, we have optics as well.. Still doesn't help with the articulation of one "Adam". .
I have dropped and torture tested my Primary Arms 4-14 and held perfect zero. Also the ACSS HUD DMR reticle version is the one to see!.

Thankyou MA channel for such a nice presentation on "getting started in long range shooting." REQUEST: Can you please go into deeper detail on optics for beginning precision shooters. Optics under $600. There are always new optics coming out on the market. A video response, and detailed comparisons between scopes would be really helpful. BUDGET SCOPES: 1. UTG 10x50 (Mil Dot reticle) SCP3-UG105AOIEW $140 + $6 S/H 2. Primary Arms 4-14x44 FFP $240...Primary Arms 4-14x44 FFP ACSS Scope $280...( rumor has it, there's an IR version too). 3. SWFA SS 10x42 (Mil Quad reticle) SS10X42MMQ $400 + $9 S/H 4. And, the Falcon Optics brand of scopes:...Falcon Menace 5.5-25x50 IR (B20 reticle) $550+ $23 S/H...Falcon Menace 5.5-25x50 (B20 reticle) $472+ $36 S/H...Falcon Menace 5.5-25x50 (ML16 reticle) $472+ $36 S/H...Falcon Menace 5.5-25x50 (Enhanced Mil-Dot reticle) $472+ $36 S/H...Falcon Menace 4-14x44 (Enhanced Mil-Dot reticle) $375 + $36 S/H...Falcon Menace 4-14x44 (ML16 reticle) $375 + $36 S/H...Falcon Menace 4-14x44 (B20 reticle) $375 + $36 S/H...Falcon Menace 4-14x44 (MOA reticle) $375 + $36 S/H Some of us, who are new to precision shooting, use our weapons for hunting too. QUESTION: What would be a good scope that could have a dual use (matches & hunting), or do we need 2 scopes Thankyou. NOTE: I have a factory T/C Dimension in 7mm-08. For those readers that don't understand (a 7mm-08 is basically a.308 necked down to a 7mm projectile; proving to buck wind better, and having an overall better bullet coefficient). Also, since I'm not yet involved in precision long range shooting, I'm still just using Hornady's American Whitetail 139gr InterLock bullets. One shot, one kill is my philosophy on harvesting deer. At ranges of 10-300 yards so far. I find that the IR (illuminated reticle) really helps in low light conditions..
please start hitting the mils/mils moa/moa subject harder. so many people end up with a mils/moa scope because they don't know why its important. why did you choose the 6.5 creed over the 7mm-08 the 7-08 has better bc, and is not as hard on the gun as 6.5..
I will cover off on mils and MOA scopes, and the hybrids which I have a personal disdain for. I went with the 6.5 Creedmoor because it's new and exciting for me. I chose the SRS-A1 for a number of reasons including the ability to swap out barrels in a matter of minutes. .

YOU HAVE TO BE OUT OF YOUR MIND TO USE A 223 (5.56) FOR LONG RANGE EVEN AT 20 MPH CROSSWIND WILL MAKE THAT LITTLE ROUND DANCE AROUND AND IT DONT MATTER IF YOU HAVE A $5000 RIFLE IT WONT HELP YOU, Get a 243 way better round.

+rdsii64 yes and i highly respect those people who are THAT GOOD in those competitions, they are what i always strive for when training.

Just thought I'd mention a scope that competes with the Primary Arms in a similar price range and magnification. The Falcon Menace line, sold at SWFA, has 4-14 mag, 30mm tube, FFP, mil/mil reticle/turrets, sunshade, and flip covers, and is $360. $60 more than the PA, but It's also hella rugged. A bit on the heavy side, but that's the trade for rugged..

+Military Arms Channel could you do a video or even a message response about the.308 vs the 30-06 Everyone says something different... half the people say.308 is way more accurate but they cite tests done in the 60's and can't explain why. The other half say the 30-06 is better because they think it's just as accurate and gives more options for reloading. Looking to get a rifle that's good for hunting and for long range target... your help would be appreciated since after months of research I still cannot come up with an answer... the 30-06 has a slightly higher B/C so I don't know why people say it shoots like 4 MOA at 1000 yards.
For $3000+ on that Desert Tech SRS-A1 6.5 Creedmoor... and that is just the chasis! I don't see that high of tolerances. I mean look at the clip at 6:31. I see quite a gap between the two halves on the receiver. Im not a gun guy in anyway, can someone justify this to me I mean for more than $2000 alone i would hope for a rifle with seamless transitions and perfect fit and finish. Unless of course it was a collectable/antique.. I don't know if it's just from me always hunting multiple targets or just me, but how do you see the rest of the target area with one eye closed I've always kept both eyes open while shooting close and long range. . can't you use sfp to range if you can put it at true half power i.e. not dialing half power but milling target at say 3 mils and dialing down to making target mil at 6 mils. Such an awesome video. I love that you are actually focused on getting started and not like some videos where they expect the beginner to run out and buy a $5000+ shooting rig. Gives someone like me who is a true newb hope that I can learn to shoot and be somewhat competitive (equipment-wise) without listing a kidney on ebay..
A 24 inch Howa 1500 heavy varmint barreled action from Legacy sports international 500.00 (comes in.308,.223,.243, and.22-250) - caliber is up to you. Just remember with the.243 and the.22-250 your barrel life with be short. A bell and carlson medalist (make sure to order one with an aluminum bedding block) 250.00. A 6.5-20x44 Vortex viper 450.00 For 1200.00 plus tax and shipping, you have the same rig I started with and still use. I competed for two seasons of F-class with it and beat people shooing set ups that cost 5 times as much as mine. Until I build myself a Semi Auto I hunted with it too. Its by no means the best rig, but untill you can can shoot clean ( that means put a complete string of fire in the 10 ring) its all you need..
Perhaps I'm not searching hard enough, but I don't see EP2 and beyond anywhere on the channel. This was a good video. Links to the next episodes in the description would be fantastic!. Awesome vid, it's nice to see an intro vid about getting into the sport that doesn't talk to the audience like we are totally naïve about the subject. . U gotta pay to play in this niche of shooting, nothing beats hearing a ring a few seconds after pulling the trigger on steel though... Gotta say ur channel is becoming one of my favorites, right to the point and no bs!. Does anyone know of all the 6.5 calibers, primarily creedmoor and.260 which one gives you the most barrel life I want to upgrade from.308 but I dont want to go magnum because like this guy said Im from Wisconsin too and I dont see myself getting to shoot past 1000 any time soon.. Thanks for this awesome discussion! I watched your "1K yards for $1K" series and had been thinking about the Savage in.308, but since I'm interested in the longer ranges, now you've got me thinking about the 6.5 Creedmor for its BC. So the question is: What about a "budget" 6.5 rifle option I'd very much appreciate your input. Keep up the great work! I'm looking forward to more videos in this series.. I have a milspec trigger on my DDM4V9LW (5.56). Would changing my trigger to a match trigger tighten up my shot group.
+Todd Jenest Almost certainly but that's largely dependent on your skill as a shooter and how you're doing behind the rifle. A poor trigger will open up groups compared to a great trigger. Timmney makes a fantastic drop in that anyone can install in seconds. It's expensive but worth it..

    Comments about this video:
How beautiful was 1:47 - 1:55 1) He stops breathing & focuses on aim 2) There is silence 3) Cricket sounds (adding a natural 'epicness') 4) The shot itself ^^". I cant count the number of times i been to the range talking to people that have no clue what moa is.. When you adjust the windage and elevation and parallax etc do you then just aim the adjustments you made on the target.
Great idea! I was thinking about how to evaluate this the other day. So, if you connect the corners to create a box and the box is essentially square and tilted at an angle, this could point to a scope mounting issue, specifically if the scope wasn't mounted level .
You can simplify this, instead of doing a square, do a cross. Make an adjustment up 3 MOA, shoot. Then down 3 MOA, shoot. Left... then right. You should have an impact 3 inches directly above, below, to the left and to the right of the zero and your center..
Good call. i like the box though because it allows you to make an adjustment on your wind and elevation instead of the cross which is one or the other. I think i will try the cross technique as well..
So the fact that he didn't make a perfect square, relative to the target lines, mean the target wasn't level, or his scope wasn't level to the ground or both.. so did the scope over or under tracks... I don't get that video, I've understood moa, mils, wind, angle, postitions, fundamentals, d.o.p.e., sight-in,.. but this one how is it different of zeroing he said the scope tracks properly, but what means over/under tracks... if the bullets are under or over the target is this zeroing with a box . over or under tracks, means the corresponding clicks of the turrets should move the bullet impact that amount...so if you make a 3 moa adjustment on a 1/4" moa 2 100yds adjustment turret, it should be 12 clicks to move it 3"...if it's less or more than what was dialed into the turret you know its not tracking correctly...assuming your errors are not taking effect on your shots. What does a target look like when the sight is not tracking properly I mean no one is gunna put rounds right through the last one so how can you chalk it up to shooter error or the sight not tracking correctly. You need to shoot at 100 yards. Then know your adjustment of the scope. For example mine is adjusted in MOA. At 100 yards 1MOA is equal to 1 inch. I know that for each click I turn my turrets, it moves 1/4 (quarter) inch at 100 yards. So according to the example if I move 3MOA(12 clicks) up and 3MOA(12 clicks) right the point of impact from center should be approximately 3 inches above and to the right. If you follow this and do it for all your points of impact should all be 3 inches up or down and left and right from center shot. If it does not look like that you know that you have a scope that does not track correctly. For example you move it 3MOA up and 3MOA right but your shot is only 2 inches up and 1.5inches down you know something is up. If you find it is not correct, you may have to go back and re zero the scope and try again, if it still is playing up make sure your adjustments are correct, ie 1/4 MOA not 1/8MOA. If all is correct then you will need to take it to the shop you bought it from and get it sorted. Hope that helps..
+furai333 Thats right 333, and if youre lucky, your scope will re-zero when returned to its zero mark. If not, then you know you get what you pay for in scopes. Good luck..
Simple, Sensible, and I will bet most shooters don't have a clue, just like I didn't. Thank you.. Easily one of the best rifle shooting educational videos on youtube. Concise, easily understood everyday language. X ring!.
Why did you start out with the Vortex viper PST and then switch to the mark 4 Was the Viper not tracking .

is this tracking difference due to that little space in the gear teeth when you go right and then turn it left again it seems the gear teeth float for a microsecond. what causes the difference there has to be a reason..
it simply sees if the reticle ACTUALLY moves as much as the turrets says it does. ex. if you turn the turret (1/4"2 100) one click the reticle should move 1/4". i know its kind of confusing, this is called tracking.. This does not address adjustment lag, where you may need to fire two or three rounds after adjusting in order to allow the springs on the scope's internal erector tube to settle in. Some shooters rap their scope sharply instead of shooting, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that..
Isn't it better to do this with more then 3 moa Ive herd of scopes having different adjustments per click depending on how many revolutions the turret has done. So instead of just doing 3 moa do 40, etc. From what i understand the purpose of this to test what the actual value of each click is and this can be a minute amount (.25 vs.29 per click) might not seam like much but it cant be tested until you test the full range of the scope *This is mostly for long range accurate shooting tho..

Noob here. What does track mean in this context I fully expect commenters to be rude to noobs btw, have at it. The vid is very well done btw. .

Thats definitely a short action receiver. The bolt has a Mauser style claw extractor and the bolt shroud has the three position safety. Ruger, FN, Winchester, and Kimber use that kind of safety but judging by the angle of the bolt handle I'd guess it's an FN/Winchester action..extremely accurate in the right hands..
2 TheNSSF You have a great weapon system. Great choice in stock (I assumed it's been embedded and keeps the barrel free floating), fluted barrel, nice optic. But dear God you need a tactical bolt knob. Your bolt is giving waaaay too much resistance.. Yes, there are many things shooters do. Some account for backlash, some account for lag, and some account for the spin of the Earth. I have never had the need to account for any of those (especially not with a quality scope). I am more interested in "functional" accuracy that can be performed on the spot in less than ideal conditions. I am not worried about taking an extra minute for 1/8 moa better accuracy. I'd rather shoot faster and be within 1 moa. .
Ryan, what gun is that is that your Rem700 with a new stock Looks like a Vortex scope, which one Very good information, Thx always a great job..

yes i got back from range shooting firearms the Russian guns i have scout scopes one is a 25 yard gun it kicks and bolt operates stiff im backing load down, to 42 it don't like load i use on my other gun! it 2x-7x it shoot good at 50 yards, i use a 2.5 X on 25 yard gun! it got more kick then other gun too! there bad day guns for hunting! it grouped the factor loads good, but there not hunting rounds, believe me i can see changes in a gun too! it a good drill i left because horses coming today! .

only problem I see it, is the rifle barrel has warmed up over the shots, so there will be some variation from that..
hey Ryan, what is that cheek rest called, I was thinking about getting one, is it safe for synthetic stocks just drill and screw, or how does that work Thanks (I have a adl 700). .
You should also shown how to test the tracking of the reticle. The reticle can be improperly placed sometimes even canted and therefore its measurements off..
In the machine shop, we worry about backlash. So, to avoid backlash one always approaches one's setting from the same "side". So, while I might always just dial in any clockwise turn of the turrets, I would always go past any counter clockwise settings, and the approach the desired setting with a few clicks clockwise. Have you ever considered "backlash" on a scopes turrets. No I like new shooters. Tracking is the distance that the bullet travels in relation to each scope Moa. Ideally it should be perfect..
A much better way to check the tracking for scopes with much fewer rounds. I been using the 3 rds per group, move windage/elevation, shoot 3 more rds and so on until the 'box' is shot. This is much better...twice the adjustments moving around, fewer shots downrange. Especially with price of ammunition and reloading components out there nowadays.Thank you..
I would greatly appreciate any input as if FFP or SFP scopes are better than an another. My particular scope is 8.5x - 25x, and the BDC is married up to 20x. Is the rest of the range of my scope useless Thanks..
Ryan, You use the eagle shooters pack on your rifle, but what type of adjustable cheek weld are you using on the 700 in this video. It's the black one with the tactical stock that has two screws to lock it into the height you need. Thanks.
judging by the short action I would say it is another.308 The savage fcp.338 comes with the hs preisicion stock as well. the hunter in the.338 has the same stock or comparable to this one but the hunter does not have the fluted barrel. .
Hello, I have a question if I may. Why did you return to zero after each shot instead of just going down (after first adjustment) on elevation 6 MOA (shot), and right windage 6 MOA (shot), then up on elevation 6 MOA (shot), then back left 3 and down 3 (final shot) Sorry I'm new to this was just wondering I don't mean to sound like a smarty pants. .
