    Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been working with some really great authors and we'll actually be having some amazing guests on the channel! :) Today's video is narrated by Nir Eyal, the author of Hooked, and I hope you guys enjoy it!     I think it's great that you're getting the authors to narrate, I feel that it adds to the credibility and integrity of the overall message of the video. Obviously though, they might not necessarily be good at voice-overs, so maybe encourage them to emote more.. Either way, I think it's worth it.. great video. do you make it yourself or you took it from elsewhere being a youtuber is a good idea can you scale without you making videos all the time.

    Nicely done. Personally, I had an "awakening" after reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, similarly points out the effect on consumers of the policy of supermarkets like Target, but this video brings new insight about the same tools exercised by the social media on the internet, which can be even more dangerous cause of the inmediacy of the rewards and the increasing craving.. That is great!!! i was almostly SHOCKED of how honest he explained and talked about it!! but i really wish if he talked about the last part of the video more...if he were able to clarify "the solution" in a more detailed form so we can practically apply it ! Keep up the great work i'm proud to say that i'm hooked on this channel !.
    I've wanted to read this book for a while and absolutely loved this short summary! Will make time to read the actual book as well as now I'm almost sure it'll be worth it!.

    This type of explanation of my habits is exactly what I need because they are some of the number one things holding me back and affecting my motivation, I want to go on facebook first real quick before my work starts and end up on there longer than I expected and use my willpower for facebook and lose motivation for everything else. I need habits to help me change... im thinking using facebook as a reward for 55 minutes of work rather than 5 minutes first then 55 minutes of work.
    I personally LOVED this author's narration and am looking forward to more, however I noticed that some people were a bit disappointed (due to habit see what I did there ) to see they weren't hearing your voice. Perhaps (if you haven't already) have a separate Playlist for the guest narrations and your own without having to differentiate them on your actual page with extra words in the title.     Wow. Your videos are amazing! I've read "the power of habit" it talks about the same subject, i'm really happy to discover your channel. Keep it up!. I'd like to point out that not only do the habits have great impact on us but have a larger impact on the direction of our culture. This is the operating system we pass on to our children and the market methodology that neglects this point and chooses to only see the short term picture is what I believe will be at the root of the next generations failings. We know enough about psychology and habit to make these connections with confidence. I would love to see a video that links the applications of habits to the greater direction of culture. We have the power now with our understandings to truly create a better world but it requires pages like this and the use of what some call human hacking to make a real push. I love what this youtube channel offers. Please look into the Zeitgeist movement lectures on habits, economics, and Culture. I would love to see a video dealing with habits and the greater culture as well as the responsibility we have as stewards of the planet. With the weight of an entheogenic understanding, Thank you..
    Though the end of the video sounds uplifting and positive I think that it is far from reality. Still these methods of getting people (especially children) hooked are mostly used for profit making without any higher moral intention. As always: great video, grrat work!     I think it's very cool that the author himself narrated this video. This gives a special feeling for the listeners. But I cannot agree with everything he says. I don't think that habitforming would be the key in developing technology. I myself am a computer scientist. And I think this habitforming is in everything we buy. There is the same amount in a chair or table as in a smartphone. And I think if one wants to develop good technology there are other main factores like simplicity or benefits (for example making our lives easier with a text editor instead of a typing machine, etc.). Habitforming is just a result of other characteristics and there is nothing exploiting or bad about developing technology for the needs of people..

    Yeah I see external triggers all the time...so much so that they have a negative effect on me...I feel like a stupid goddamn circus monkey jumping through hoops for a "reward"...A "reward" that ultimately turns out to be a freaking joke... y'all need to keep the mental mind fuck you people like to play on people, to people who play games like angry birds, and run to places like facebook when they feel lonely or bored...Facebook sucks..Now I know where a good portion of my disgust for todays products has transpired.

    Nir's question at the end is so relevant to today's advertising. I was listening to a radio program yest and they were discussing how ad's are beginning to be placed in the TV shows again. They referenced how, after he returned from a commercial break, Stephen Colbert was munching on a taco from taco bell and had some Ben and Jerry's ice cream out for desert. Of course, he had a little skit for it, with a wink to the camera. The interviewee(on the radio program) was def concerned with the ethics of these strategies as well. People trust the tv personalities, so it does cross a line- maybe if they actually used and loved the product it could justify it. But, it's a big nut to un-wrap. We've been hearing it on the radio for a long time too though.. Great topic and vid. Thanks +FightMediocrity!.

    Having addiction experts design products seems a little unethical to me. I think internet addiction is already plaguing tens of millions of people if not hundreds of millions globally. Really its causing people to lose massive amounts of sleep and off set more productive things they could be doing. I guess realizing it is one step to fighting it. I deleted my Facebook six months ago for this very reason, I could see the cyclical nature of it. Now I'm starting to question all my internet usage and even this comment itself.. I guess knowing is half the battle...

He had to put it in otherwise people would consider him a sociopath lol. While his work is brilliant and great, it's obviously gonna be abused by founders. I'll post again when the book is released!. ...at 12:34 he said "you'll stew it"...I'm presuming that's a phrase used especially in the "wine country" . Frankly, it's not so much the actual level of effort (hard to do vs easy to do)...it's perceived level of effort. Ex: When you are completely relaxed in a lazy boy and the remote control is on the other side of the room, many don't get up and get the remote, perceiving it to be too hard. Ditto with how different people view the same task. Some view training for and running a marathon has nearly impossible to do; others view it as somewhat easy. The later group will require less motivation. In fact, a motivators best tool is to get the motivatee to perceive a goal to be easier than they previously thought. -A good teacher explains something, the lightbulb goes on, and the teacher says, "See, it's not that hard, you can do it." -When sensing low morale from his team, coaches sometimes make each player say why they can win the game. After a couple dozen reasons why, the team's perception changes from it's too hard to win to it's easy to win. -For all the evil that Hitler did, Hitler motivated Germans to stop thinking of Germany as a defeated, resource-depleted country to Germans believing they can do anything and in a very short period of time. They made quantum leaps in every field imaginable and in just a few years. Try it today. Think of something you are dreading...like eat healthy, exercise, a status meeting. Quickly visualize how easy it is. For food, you grab this instead of that. For exercise, you change clothes, warm up, enjoy.     Kind of like the opposite to a 'death by a thousand cuts' I want to say 'the good life by a thousand little successes'. I think of it in terms of movie making; a movie is a continuous stream of small segments of footage that each were equally attended to in terms of achieving excellence, no matter how long it took to attain that excellence. But when you add it all up as well as editing it all down to the best of the best, you get something greater than the sum of its parts, or at least sufficiently enough to make an profit out of it.. Weighing food before eating prevents eating too much. This simple science can be done by 4th graders who learn how to measure by weight.. Well, this video was "Awesome!!!"...really practical and insightful... I am gonna try it. As always...TED talks are best!!. Habits are a big deal. Your habits, or rituals, become who you are. Choose and practice good habits and things will go well for you. Choose and practice bad habits and you will face more troubles in life and school..

    Am lazy. I watched youtube the whole day. when I get up my food is already cooked. Dished already done, Bed already done neat. Clothes already washed. House already mopped. And am still watching youtube for tricks to ameliorate life. I didnot know that...after every work done I give myself a candy (a video to be watched) on you tube..

    after i smoke a cigarette(existing behavior) i will quit smoking cigarettes(tiny behaviors) immediately thereafter every time...makes sense.
    Thank you TED Talk for sharing so many goodies. This is one helped me already a lot in just about one week. It really is much easier doing "Baby Steps" to get the big goal, then jumping straight to goal and fall back to the old habit..

    Theres no way I would ever floss 1 tooth or do 1 push up because I know how useless it would be. If I wanted to get into the habit if flossing I'd just do them all right off the bat and be more likely to create the habit that way, the right way..

I think to many people look at something like getting into shape as a huge undertaking that is to big to even start. I was one of those people, but I started with doing 5 squat's each time I took a dog out. With 2 dogs that want outside many times a day, those squat's are adding up. Then I added doing things like, leg lifts while waiting for email to log in, or a page to load. Small hand weights are also sitting near by that I can grab while Facebook logs in...so, I am doing the same things I have always done, but I am getting in a bit more exercise while I work. I just keep adding a small bit at a time...I may never be Super Women, but I am closer now than I was a couple of weeks ago. I would never belong to a gym and planning to add a BIG new peice to my day was not in the cards, so these little things are the only way to go. And yes, I need a trigger. ;-} Sheryl.

    An old procedure but a very powerful one. This video has inspired me to maintain some good habits and to track it digitally, I am using an android app Rewire-Habit and Goal tracker-an ultimate helper!.
    I am so loving this video. I watched it at 4am this morning, so hope to get started on lots of things today from exercising to being more organised.. I am endeavoring to get "back in the saddle of life" with renewed motivation and a reason to "endeavor" beyond a paycheck and having "stuff" in my life. We all need mentors, books, teachers...and we also must be willing to teach others who may ask us something. Small successes and the "dance", probably helps to rewire our brains. Our brains are, or have plasticity.. Seems easy enough. I did 2 burpees after every pee. At home. In public, couple minutes of exotic dance-yoga stretches. Why are people criticizing this Anything that helps other people improve, thank you. Easier. Double thanks. This takes guts and smarts. Bet most of us here have not even put this to the test. Why even bother to watch this entire video This seems to zip lips at my work: For every 2 minutes bitching about (job), dedicate 2 minutes gratitude about (regular paycheck, feed the kids, friends at work...) Having to think is really hard for some them, especially about gratitude. They hard wired themselves to dumb down. Once they got into smarter talk, they are actually nice to work with.. +maryanne1231000 actually you're right. I can remember some things my teachers did to help their work. furthermore, if you think about it, everyone does this (maybe not the celebration thing). The difference is, we don't do charts or give talks about, in fact most people don't think about it, they just do it. I don't know if thinking about it helps, but in my case it just demotivates more than anything, because I end up falling into the routine of doing the same small thing and not evolve.. Pairing a conditioned habit with an unconditional habit to form a new habit. Otherwise, great video, iv heard of the 66day habit change study done by Cambridge University.. I am going to make a habit of doing my studies daily so that i score good in my exams and i guess its already less than 70days left for it and i can't wait to give you the results of it thank you sir 😊.
    Looking at exercising and napping daily as well as going to bed at the same time every night. I also want to read more books and watch more educational videos. Glad I stumbled upon this..
    Replacing existing weak habits with better ones sounds more plausible.We are a creatures of habits right.!. What are habits anyway And why its stick. .A habit is physically the way neurons from certain parts of a brain connects with certain other parts.It forms active paths for a tiny impulse(electricity) to flow in a certain route.These routines were programmed by our lifestyles in the past.To change these routes into new ones is painful because brain fights back.,like a relapse.It doesn't like change. Also habits are rarely stand alone,they are all related.Sometimes you may need to impose changes to multiple seemingly unrelated old habits to form a new smart one..
    I really like your video a lot. I want to work really hard for study. Sometimes I make plan for study but finally end up not following it. I am graduate and studying for competitive exams for jobs. Your video showed me the way how I can do it. It is well guided motivational video. In first level I will study for 1/2 hour. In 2nd level I will attach it that after freshen up from morning rituals I will study. 3rd or everyday goal keep going. Actually I have many plans and want to completely transform my life. Like I want to wake up early at 4 a.m., studying a lot for the whole day and at evening- walking. Again don't want to see television in night or waste my time over Facebook, WhatsApp and want to plan every day in advance and talk less to girl friend over phone. In short I have to transform everything in me but the tragedy is I never succeeded in it. Only thing I do is I left smoking cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and alcohol for about a year. I personally feel its a big achievement. But never achieved my above mentioned desire. Bless me to achieve my goals. And thanks for you wonderful video. .

In the long run, doing only one thing untill it becomes automatic and only then adding a new habit leads to more change in the long run. It seems tedious and slow but it isn't. It wasn't the problem of planning the things that I am going to do. The problem is in fear of starting it again. I need to find correct mindset each time I want to start doing something. The most annoying thing here is that I stress overtime when I am not doing something to push myself, and when I am stressed then I can't start it. So it looks like a circle of doom I have a hard time to break..
    +Daniel Debert Daniel, I completely understand what you are saying about the vicious cycle as I've been there on a few occasions. If you have a chance, check out Essentialism by Greg McKeown. It's an amazing book and it talks a lot about some of the problems you mention above. It's a quick read too. .

    I want to do a ride for charity in August. I need to ride my bike every day, but I have not been able to develop this habit. I think trying to ride 5 to 10 miles every day is just too big for me right now. So I am going to start really small. I will get out the bike and ride around the block. I will let you know how it goes..

    +Cherries Jubilee I agree that 5 miles daily seems a bit too much at first. I would start with 5 MINUTES. Get used to that. Make it part of your routine. Train the behaviour. If you set the goal for 5 Minutes, sometimes you'll do just that, other times you'll go for 5 MILES but you are going to come back feeling like a champ every time..
